LUCAS COMBINED STOP AND TAIL LAMP.

The Butler stop and tail lamp now used on the Bentley has always given trouble previously on 10,000 mile tests on the Bentley chassis.

An inspection of the lamp inside also shews very poor workmanship and they are obviously more or less hand made.

Messrs. Lucas sometime ago asked to be allowed to submit for test a sample combined stop and tail lamp designed in collaboration with ourselves to suit our requirements on the Bentley.

A suitable lamp was finally produced which complied with our requirements and this was fitted to 4.B.IV for test.

After completing 20,000 miles running on this chassis the lamp was removed for inspection.

As is usual with all rear lamps on the Bentley the case was heavily scored with grit and stones thrown up from the road. It would be desirable to protect the rear lamp and cable on the Bentley from damage by stones by fitting some kind of stone guard underneath the lamp.

A small aluminium reflector which was secured behind the stop lamp bulb by means of a rivet to the case had worked loose due to the rivet head being cut off by stones.

The lamp has been returned to Messrs. Lucas for examination and they propose to secure this reflector by sweating to the case, eliminating the rivet.

The results of the test were satisfactory and the lamp is considered to be a big improvement over the Butler now fitted as standard.

A standardization sheet is therefore being circulated.
