PHANTOM 111 - MODIFIED OIL PUMP, RELIEF VALVES AND OIL FILTER TO SUIT REVISED STEERING GEAR.

Please receive herewith

E.CD.590 Modifications to Oil Relief Valve, Oil Pump, etc. with A.C. bye-pass Filter - Phantom lll.

These modifications have been made to give clearance for the revised Wraith lll type steering gear proposed for Ph.lll. as shown on steering layout F.CD.553.

We have revised the oil connections between the oil pump and relief valves, and this calls for alterations to both the oil pump casing and the relief valve casing.

The pressure filter is replaced by the A.C. bye-pass filter and the oil connections to and from the bye-pass filter are shown coupled in a similar manner to that used on the Wraith lll engine; the filter support is also identical to that used for Wraith lll.

A modified design for the filter support is at present being made for the Wraith lll engine, and if adopted, will also be used for the Phantom lll engine, the new support will not alter the position of the filter, nor the facings on the crankcase for the support.

The connecting pipe from relief valve to oil gauge is slightly modified to suit the new position of the connection on the relief valve casing.

The modifications to the crankcase to suit this design are included in the detail drawing which has already been handed over to BY/CS. for issue.

Will you please detail and instruct the altered details experimentally for the next 15,000 miles test with a view to standardising for 'E' series.

The following designs which arein hand will also be required to give clearance for the revised steering gear, and these will be issued shortly.-

(1). Modified steering column controls to engine.
(2). Offisde exhaust downtake altered in shape.
(3). Suction Filter in sump revised to facilitate with-drawal.

There will also be a modification to the exhaust intermediate
