HYPOID GEARS.
-----------

Having heard from Oy. that the Gleason Company were in difficulties and practically held up so far as producing Hypoid gears commercially was concerned, and that they were trying different materials, we wrote firms who were producing forgable high tensile bronze alloys in this Country and after obtaining their replies, wrote to Oy. stating that we could obtain for him:-

a/- High tensile manganese bronze as a casting.

b/- High tensile aluminium bronze as a forging.

and that if he thought it desirable we could supply blanks, for the Gleason Company to cut gears for us, in these materials

From Oy's reply given below you will note we shall not be able to obtain Hypoid gears in the near future, but that the matter is apparently having the closest attention with the Gleason Company.

"We are obliged to you for your letters of Nov.22 on Hypoid Gears.

Mr.Ross is keeping closely in touch with Gleasons on this subject and we know they are very closely in touch with the bronze foundries. We have not felt able to send them your notes on bronzes just yet; for the reason that we have only heard of the real trouble with Hypoid Gears in a round about way. Gleasons are naturally very reticent about it.

We know however that:

(a) Packard adopted the Hypoid Gears with a moderate offset to the pinion and apparently obtained good results in experimental work and fair results in service. But they have never had very quiet axles previously and while the initial quietness of the new axles undoubtedly helps them sell cars, the possible future service cost is a matter that only time can decide. With an average mileage per car of probably 8000 or 10000 per year, the service situation will naturally not worry them.
