6119. EXPERIMENTAL DEPARTMENT. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/RC.{R. Childs}11/JH. 18th. November, 1938. Messrs. Delco-Remy & Hyatt Ltd., 111, Grosvenor Road, LONDON. S.W.1. For the attention of Mr. B. Rushton. Dear Sirs, We thank you for your letter of the 15th inst. and also confirm having received from you 30 shaft assemblies, and a batch of 150 cams for Brinell testing. It has now been stipulated that all further supplies of distributors shall have cams of a hardness not less than 400 Brinell, the distributors to be marked against its serial number with a star to show that it has been tested in this respect. All distributors now in our stock are to be tested and any cams less than 300 Brinell shall be replaced. This is, more or less, as agreed between us, on my recent visit to London. We have tested the thirty shaft assemblies as received from you, and find that 17 only are above the minimum figure of 300, we will keep these for a changeover. Of thirty cams only 16 were above this figure, we are sending these off right away so that some more shaft assemblies may be built for the purpose of changing over. We will test the remainder of the batch of cams as soon as possible, marking all over 400, for fitting to future distributors. Have you had any success with your hardening experiment? If it will help, we will experiment on one ourselves. In testing the cams, only a 10 kilogramme load should be used as the usual 30 K.gm. load will go right through the skin, which on most of them, is very thin. I have tested the American Delco cam and found it to be just over 450 Brinell, also a Lucas which gave a figure of 400. We shall be glad to receive more shaft assemblies as soon as possible for changeover purposes. Yours faithfully, | ||
