Oy7-E-92026 -2- Proposal. The parts have been examined by the Committee this morning and we have discussed all possible cures we could think of. It has been decided to try a simple internal and external gear coupling, as shown in sketch A-9725, when reassembling the parts. This works so excellently on the propeller shaft that we believe it will be almost entirely free from wear in the clutch. It is proposed to make the teeth straight but narrow, and grind the external gear to give a max. of .002" backlash, and then trust to centralizing of the gear itself rather than use a spherical spigot. We have difficulty in making the latter perfectly true with the teeth. The projected bearing area will be about 4 times the area of the pins on the present coupling and will occur at 1.875 radius instead of 1.5 radius, giving a possible overall improvement of 5 to 1. After due mileage, if the change is successful, we shall send a Proposal Sheet to Mr. Royce. MO/E | ||
