The only really troublesome feature which appears as a result of dismantling this car is the slack which has developed in the universal joint inside the clutch. These were English model parts and the gearbox was in line within .010". The cylindrical bushings G-50285 and G-50285 which fit in parts F-72597 Coupling Fork and G-72624 Coupling Shaft had worn the holes in which they fit until there was over .010" slack sideways in G-72597 and over .015" in G-72624. The wear had all occurred in the forks, not on the bushes, and had occurred mostly on the "driving" side and slightly on the "overrun" side. The pins on the coupling ring G-50291 showed brown "seizure" marks but had only worn .0015" to .002". The bore of the bushes showed little wear, not more than 1/2 a thousandth. The bushes had been "epicycling" around in the forks, as shown by the rubbing marks on the outside of the bushes. Lubrication had been too much if anything. Instruction book calls for a few drops every 2000 miles. We put in about 1/2 a gunful every 600 miles till we saw the overflow from the bottom of the casing, as we wanted to find how good the clutch was in getting rid of this oil. There was no apparent leakage at the joints of the casing, and on dismantling, the casing was full of oil. | ||
