X4516. Expl. Dept. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}2/KT. 26th March 1931. Messrs Boulton & Paul Ltd., Norwich. For the attention of Mr. Odgers. Dear Sir, With further reference to your letter of March 9th. We have been going further into the question of the rig, sketch of which you sent us, and there are two points which we cannot quite understand. (1) We estimate that the H.P. required to produce a jet of air 25 sq.ft as shewn on your sketch, having a velocity of 60 M.P.H., will be 130, allowing 50% efficiency for the generating apparatus. Actually we had hoped to have run up speeds of 75 M.P.H. as we explained to you verbally. (2) We have no information of the behaviour of the open jet penetrating the atmosphere, but we anticipate that the velocity would fall appreciably over the distance of 5 ft. as shewn in your sketch. Therefore we should require considerably more than the 130 H.P. that we have previously estimated for the air velocity past the radiator, to be what we require. We shall be very much indebted to you for any information you can give us on these two points. Yours faithfully, For Rolls-Royce Ltd. | ||
