To EJJ. From Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} X4516 Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}3/MJ.26.3.31. RADIATOR TESTING RIG. It is now apparent that there are two alternative possibilities for this rig. (1) To use the A.C. motor to generate the power required to drive the fan. This is far and away the most convenient method of generating the power as it avoids complication of the petrol, oil, and water systems of an engine. If it was agreed that we could have a 60 HP. motor we should then be content with an air jet 9 sq.ft. in area, with a velocity of 70 m.ph. (2) If increase in peak load due to the motor is considered out of the question then we may be forced to use a petrol engine. Under these circumstances there is no object in stinting ourselves with power and we shall want to go for the full air blast of 25 sq.ft. at 85 m.p.h. This will require approximately 250 HP. so that an aero engine would have to be used. We think that if you submit the cost of two schemes arranged on these lines, we shall have sufficient information to ask for a decision.
