X872. c. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}21/H30.10.29. re. PHANTOM II. CLUTCH LUBRICATION. With reference to your DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}1/M16.10.29., our experience on test with these clutches so far has been that the oil feed hole can be lubricated with a syringe, or even with the standard oil can supplied with the kit (we do not now supply syringes with our standard kit). With regard to the lubrication of the internal working parts, we have found when dismantling clutches on test that the lubrication internally is quite satisfactory, but this condition may be entirely due to the initial lubrication given when the clutch was originally assembled. The only fault we have noticed on our inspection with new cars on test is that there are signs of the small internal ball race turning in the bore where it fits on to the clutch shaft spigot. We have not, however, found any ill effect in the working of the clutch due to this. Also we had the same trouble on the Phantom I. clutches. With regard to the question of the efficacy of the hand lubrication, this is a feature which we feel can only be ascertained by the car being in service for some time. I have discussed the matter with the Experimental Dept. and they point out they are reporting this matter to you in full. EP.{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} P.S. We have today received instructions, dated 30.10.29. for oil syringes to be supplied with the tool kits for 40/50 and 20-HP., which we understand has been done at the request of Sales Dept. EP.{G.
