Sr/VA3/ET.5.II.37 - 2 - EWP.{Mr Punt}, who left Paris this morning with a Bentley car which has to be delivered to Derby, will hand to Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} to-morrow afternoon the damaged parts removed from the above steering, for examination. We have now fitted a reconditioned steering column to this car. ----------------- CHASSIS 3.OP.II4 - Zographos - New car. We sent a tester yesterday to collect the above new car from Binder, the Coachbuilders, in order that we should carry out the final tune up and test. On his return, our man reported excessive slackness in the steering column and said that the steering had a tendency to seize on each lock. Upon examination of the steering column in position, we find that the steering wheel has about 35° of free movement before the pendulum lever commences to move. We propose that we should send you the steering column for examination and, if you agree to this, it will be necessary for you to have a new steering (E type) sent to us by return and by Air Mail for this car. In order to save expense, we would propose sending the steering column minus the steering wheel, control tubes and pendulum lever. ----------------- We can hardly believe that, even if the steerings of the above two cars were roughly handled during transit of the cars to and from the Motor Show, this should be the cause of the above.
