X7 310. To BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} from E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} E.7/HP.3.11.32. c. Sgr.Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} P.2. Synchromesh - Failure of 3rd Motion Shaft. Referring to Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls}12/KT:31.10.32 we think this failure has obviously occurred due to bending moment at the change in section, and we believe this bending moment may be due to the loading thrown on the shaft in the second half of the box, causing deflection of the major part of the shaft. We agree that the substantial radius proposed should make a considerable difference to the strength of the shaft, and we should also like to see a radius substituted for the sharp corner into which the pipped on steel bush carrying the third speed gear fits. We fear the second square corner may in time develop a crack under the effects of the shaft loading. This also applies to the 20/25, Peregrine, and Bensport gearboxes.
