List of required design alterations for various components of the Wraith chassis.

| DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}12/C.6.9.38. All Testers VARIOUS MODIFICATION TO CHASSIS. Referring to RHC{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer}/SB.{Mr Bull/Mr Bannister}1/LS.5.7.38. - Items requiring Design Alteration, we make the following comments :- (1). Brakes - Wraith. (a). A scheme for facilitating the assembly of the felt washer has been issued for test. (b). There should be a felt washer on the rear bearing, but it presents some difficulty in getting in. On the other hand, the protective felt washer on the front toggle shaft presents no difficulty at all. As regards hardening the retaining washer surface; as the unhardened washers on the rear brake and also similar washers on P.lll seem to stand up, we agree to deleting the hardening on the front washer. Details to be altered. (c). A special spanner is used now for tightening up. To make the tightening of the lock nut easy, a redesign is necessary. We will do this as soon as possible. (2). Connecting Rod Big End Bush. Wraith. On Ph.lll this has already been done. We agree to a .248 pin in a .250 hole, and suggest the details should be altered. (3). Oil Pipe, Relief Valve to Filter. Wraith. Layout of Pipes and position of clip has been altered by detailing. (4). Camshaft Drive - Wraith. The tab seems to get into the groove of the thread in some cases, which from its thickness it is just able to do, in other cases where the tab comes opposite the thread itself, the trouble does not arise. A suggestion of Works to use a plain washer between the nut and the tab washer is being tried, but we suggest that thickening the washer from .036 to .048 will do most good. Two tabs is another very effective but more costly alternative. We suggest detail should be altered to .048 thick and tried. (5). Dynamo drive - Wraith 111. The star should be swung round 7 1/2°, which will double the number of positions. Details to be altered. | ||
