To BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} GRY{Shadwell Grylls} x 327 E/Ev.{Ivan Evernden - coachwork}1/MN.3.5.35. Copy to RHC.{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer} Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} BY/RD. RE REVISED SPECTRECodename for Phantom III CHASSIS FRAME. We send you herewith LeC 4482 showing a revised design for the SpectreCodename for Phantom III side channel. The modification in principle consists of providing continuous hand holes along theinner plate of the side channel so that the majority of the bolting of the units on the outside of the frame may be effected by the use of short bolts near the top and bottom flanges. Distance pieces have to be retained for all cross members and other units attached to the inner plate in order that no load may be placed on the welded seam. The saving in weight due to the abolition of some 90 long bolts and distance pieces and due to the increased number of hand holes enables us to use a thicker gauge material for the side channel pressing and the plate without increasing the weight. We are proposing to use 11 gauge steel (.116). Since we have not increased the number of holes in the plate in front of the cross the increase in bending stiffness of the front arms of the frame will be 22% whilst the torsional stiffness will be increased correspondingly. We are handing to BY/RD a print of this drawing so that an immediate investigation can be made into the effect that this change will have on the run of the piping and wiring, and a print to RHC.{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer} to enable some tests to be made. The drawing shows the revised and simplified design of body brackets and the modifications to the bolting of the step irons. We also show a modified fixing for the spare wheel carrier, the complete scheme of which, LeC 4445, will be issued in due course. It is proposed to use this frame on the 4th. SpectreCodename for Phantom III chassis, the frame of which is already built up, and we suggest that a pair of side members be obtained forthwith. Ev.{Ivan Evernden - coachwork} Att: LeC 4482. | ||
