re Tail Light for Continental use on Bentley Car.

-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- --

The question has arisen in connection with the Bentleys we send over to France: What is an owner to do who wishes to use his car on the Continent, regarding the tail lamp?

This car is one that will be very likely taken across the Channel, and at the moment there is no provision in the equipment for a tail lamp on the left-hand side.

To overcome this difficulty we suggest that the present Butler tail and stop light should be duplicated, and loop wired to the existing lamp, which would not require any modification to the existing wiring scheme. The owner then would merely have to change his lamp bulbs over from the right-hand lamp to the left-hand when disembarking from foreign soil, and vice versa, returning to England. He might even run about with both lamps in operation all the time, which would not greatly matter as the increased consumption due to an extra tail light would be negligible.

A double tail light is actually in use on some cars, and when the lamps are well spaced out this practice shows the width of the vehicle to overtaking traffic.

It is also suggested that the extra stop lamp could be converted to a white reversing light by fitting another socket connection at the rear end of the chassis, and an extra conductor to a switch on the facia board, or to a switch connected to the gear lever for operation in the reversed position. This, however, we regard more as a future possibility and not connected with the difficulty to be solved at the moment. Also it is understood that the use of such a light has been made illegal in England.

We should like to have Sales opinion on the suggestion to duplicate the Butler lamp.x We are not by any means satisfied with this lamp, as it falls to pieces when used in France, but we are looking into the question of overcoming the defects in its construction.
