DEEPER FRAME SIDE MEMBERS. P2.

We have been looking into the ways and means of producing a car with deeper side members, with a view to testing their effect.

SUGGESTION 1. The first suggestion is that we have such a side member made from new dies with a view to using it on production for P.2 and any new car that may replace it. This is the scheme that "R" would like us to adopt.

SUGGESTION 2. This suggestion is to weld up the side channels as you did the first body subframes. It is suggested that if the welding gave way the result might be serious.

SUGGESTION 3. To overcome this objection we suggest that a standard side member might be sawn through its web along the neutral axis as shewn on N. Sch.3310. The lower flange and half web would be split somewhere near the centre and then two arms would be bent to give the shape of the deeper frame. The gap in the web and between the two lower arms would be filled in with sheet steel by welding. The tensile of the bottom flange would be assured by bolting on an inside and outside plate.

SUGGESTION 4. A way of quickly stiffening the frame of an existing car would be to attach an extra channel, welded up, to the bottom flange of the side member, by means of reamed taper bolts. This is also shewn on N.Sch.3310.

SUGGESTION 5. As a means of preliminarily testing a deeper frame over an area now covered by the tie-bars, we suggest that it would be possible to bolt on a piece of ordinary commercial channel steel extending from the rear end of the front spring to the commencement of the frame upsweep.

We suggest that, in connection with whichever of these schemes you may decide to adopt, you will wish to make test using the present chassis crossmembers and also using the cross-in-frame which you have already. If test are proving the value of the cross a new design has to be sent to you of a cheaper construction.
