Y 142. To BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} From Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rn.{Mr Robinson} c. to EHC. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rn.{Mr Robinson}11/KT.10.9.32. FURTHER PEREGRINE SHOCK ABSORBERS. It will be recollected that when the specification for the first six Peregrine cars was decided upon, we were in doubt as to the reliability of the J.III. shock absorber, and it was decided to go ahead with the existing 25 HP. type damper on the first six cars. Since that time we have made considerable progress with these dampers, and can now say that it appears that these dampers can be made to operate satisfactorily with the valve to the right-hand picture of N.Sch.3497. These shock absorbers have various advantages over the present type, such as rigidity of the levers, and facilities for remote control, and we therefore think that of the six cars, four should be built with J.III dampers, and two with standard. We are sending you in the immediate future, details of the parts which EHC. made to the scheme, instructed, and which have proved satisfactory. We should like the damper to be instructed with an alum. case as recently requested by R, and it should also have the latest type piston with the chamferred end to prevent "flaking" of the alum. case.
