8613s. WST S/W. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} re- Improved Illumination for Instruments R-R and Bentley. I believe you have in hand one or two schemes for a different method of treatment for the illumination of our instruments, and I would be glad to know if you can yet give me any news as to the development of this matter. It is referred to briefly in your Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Wst3/MA19.2.34. under the heading of 'Speedometer and Rev Counter for Bentley', but I believe your activities in this respect are likely to be applied to both R-R and Bentley. I think you realise that we feel we want to still further improve the illumination, particularly on the Rolls-Royce, and I think the chief drawback to the present R-R system is that the illumination is not yet sufficiently uniform all over the dial, particularly of the speedometer and clock. It is very good on the one side and rather weak on the other, although I personally feel that we shall probably get the best results with the present form, namely, black dials with slightly embossed white figures, so as to keep the reflection from any luminous or light coloured dials down to a minimum.
