To BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} Copy to Mr. Hayden. (struck out) Ha/Dry. Ha/Gee. Hay/Martindale. Wraith II. Front Hub, Steering Pivot and Brakes. We have already sent to you proposals for the Wraith II road wheels for both 4" and 5" rims of 17" diameter, on N.Sch.4369. We send herewith N.Sch.4813 showing the front hub, the brakes and the steering pivot. With respect to the pivot it will be noticed that we have developed the Orthodox R.R. pivot in place of the design used on Phantom III, as we feel that the former is a better job. Efforts have been made to make the outer race of the roller bearing completely circular so that the entire bearing may be made by the Bearing Manufacturers. With respect to the hub bearings we would point out that it is our intention that the inner race of the inner bearing shall be pinched up by means of the nut on the axle stud through the inner race of the outer bearing, the washer and the tubular distance piece. The wheel hub and retaining nut are intended to be Bentley parts. We have noticed advertised, and believe the Expl. Dept. have tried a nut with a bronze face for the cone to prevent creaks and sticking. If this design of wheel nut is found beneficial we suggest it should be used. The brake drum and shoes follow the latest practice as recently issued for test on the Bentley. A subsequent scheme will show the brake adjustment and operation.
