COPY. LETTER FROM V.W.PILKINGTON. 25.6.40. Dear Robotham, I am sorry I have been so long in replying to your letter of the 18th, but I have been very much tied up on an urgent job required for the Ministry of Aircraft Production. I have already written to you stating that I would like to do all I can to clear up the difficult position which has arisen as far as you are concerned on the subject of A.C.9. bearings, and I think I had better take full responsibility for quoting to Mr. Howlett that I had heard that R.R. had been considering alternative bearing materials. This, I might state, did not arise from any discussion I personally had with you. Mr. Spurrier has already explained to you, I think, what actually transpired, and unfortunately I used this information as being authentic when in fact this was not the case. It does not alter the fact, however, that we are having troubles with A.C.9. material and, as I advised you, a very complete investigation is being carried out of the whole position, a report will be compiled and it is our intention to consult you with regard to the contents of this report before we make any definite further observations on the subject. I will be away from the Works for some days, but will get in touch with you again immediately on my return. Yours faithfully, (Signed) Pilkington. | ||
