His RECEIVED JUN 28 1927 X8030 R.{Sir Henry Royce} [crossed out] c.Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} c.BJ c.Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} c.Cy. BY9/H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} 27.6.27. ----------------- PHANTOM CYLINDER BLOCKS. ----------------------- We took in hand the question of the cylinder block immediately the matter was brought home to us by CY. We immediately started on Monday morning last, fitting distance pieces as per the scheme submitted, to cylinder blocks, and we were able to show a definite improvement by the fitting of the blocks in question. At the same time we instructed the casting-in of a piece in the cylinder jacket, similar to the one you suggest, except that we move the webs sideways instead of central, and core a hole through the centre of the block in order to enable the Pattern Shop to get their core-supporting wires directly through. We are now going ahead to incorporate your scheme by which we alter the covers. We anticipate having no more castings after Wednesday next of the old type. No time or effort is being lost to apply both the remedy and the improved scheme of casting with the least possible delay, as we agree the advantage gained is such as to justify any effort that can be put into it. Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} has given the matter special attention and is pushing our modifications with the object of getting the improvements at the earliest possible moment. We have this morning received E's modification referred to in R1/M.25.6.27. and we are working on same. Personally, I think the crankcase is really the worst offender. A web diagonally across the two bosses on the weak side, tying the side of the crankcase to the cross web, supporting the boss, would, in my opinion, clear the trouble. BY.{R.W.
