To E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} c. to By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} X1300 HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/FJH.{Fred J. Hardy - Chief Dev. Engineer}11/KW.11.11.35. Ph.III & 25 HP. Marles Type Steering. A case has occurred on 33-EX of an oil leak from the inside of the steering box to the Bijur system. The gear was fitted with N.Sch.4579. The leakage occurred at the offside end of the sleeve F.87843, which is pressed inside the rockershaft and was due to bad fitting. The hole in the rockershaft had not been reamed and the offside end of the sleeve was 0.002" smaller than the nearside end. However, we consider that the design is rather difficult to produce because the sleeve has to be a fit at both ends and it is not possible to tell whether this condition exists when the sleeve is pressed in. We are trying out the modification shown on Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}9 attached on experimental chassis, and if you agree to this alteration we think it should be introduced on production as soon as possible.
