Bentley Exhaust System.

Very frequently we find that the intermediate expansion box on the Bentley exhaust system touches the frame after the car has run a few thousand miles. We also find that a lot of the "tinniness" of the system is removed by lagging this box. We therefore require designs for a lagged box stayed to the engine unit.

With the Terraplane mounting we shall require a more flexible silencer suspension.

Silent Tappets R.R. Halford Type.

Whilst the Cadillac scheme gives a greater degree of silence than that which we have developed ourselves, nevertheless we are getting excellent results from the silent tappet to Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}1364 attached and feel it is well worth scheming to get this as light and neat as possible. We suggest the Bentley and 20/25 are the cars we should cater for.

Silent tappets have an additional advantage that they tend to reduce timing gear rattles.

Textolite Gears Bentley & 20/25.

As we previously pointed, out, to get the benefit out of textolite gears we require, in addition to the schemes of the coarse pitch gears, we have already received, designs for a textolite water pump pinion and a balanced camwheel in the same material. We have produced these parts experimentally (see sketches attached) and they are running on Bn{W.O. Bentley / Mr Barrington}'s car. In spite of un-ground steel gears of coarse pitch and no burnishing of the Textolite, features which we learnt in America were essential for the best results, these particular gears are much quieter than the average Bentley gear and they had no hand bedding.

With regard to wear, Buicks have convinced us that we shall be no worse off than with metal gears.
