Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} from E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} 47230 E1/M21.1.29. c. to BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} RE. 'SS{S. Smith}' CAR. X.7770 X.7230 Thank you for your memo. of the 19th.inst. It had occurred to me that it was extremely important to get a modified car running in about 2 weeks if possible and I had been weighing up the job from this point of view. In the list of items given in E1/M19.1.29., the longest job we have is the modified engine mounting, and as we had mostly anticipated R's wishes in this matter we are well away with this. WW. instructions for crankshaft rear oil retainer and exhaust manifold are now in BY's hands. The other part of the exhaust system - e.g. - the silencer and pipe up to the engine are DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}'s. We have had no word yet from R.{Sir Henry Royce} on the exhaust system but I asked Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} about it and we are putting the ideas R.{Sir Henry Royce} did mention into the modified scheme. As regards the remainder of the items on E1/M19.1.29., some of these have been dealt with and the others are well in hand. I will undertake to complete sending all engine section instructions this week providing the present programme is not unduly modified. DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} agrees also as regards his section. We shall do all we can to ensure that the great effort already made in producing the SS.{S. Smith} is not defeated. As a matter of fact both DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} and myself were working in our respective offices yesterday (Sunday). E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} Since writing the above we have received memos. from R.{Sir Henry Royce} on the question of the modified exhaust system. We will notify you later if there is likely to be any delay. It will be realised that the instructions we are sending through are not necessarily approved by R.{Sir Henry Royce} Blueprints are sent simultaneously to Derby and Le CanadelHenry Royce's French residence, and as a rule the job is not put in hand in Derby until R.{Sir Henry Royce} approves of the design, but this is a case where we have to get the car going to the best of our judgment, following up later with such modifications as are required.
