From the Rolls-Royce experimental archive: a quarter of a million communications from Rolls-Royce, 1906 to 1960's. Documents from the Sir Henry Royce Memorial Foundation (SHRMF).
Proposed design improvements to a frame, including links, studs, and cross-members, with feedback on specific blueprints.

frame. Should this stud be broken at any time it can be re-
placed fairly easily.

The base above referred to should have recesses drop
forged in each corner so as to fit over the square collar on
the stud.

You will notice that I propose that the links shall be made
straight, which will be much more practical, and will enable
the centres to be brought rather nearer together.

There will be now no alteration to the third cross member
flange.

The shorter the link is, the less the stress to which the stud
is subject, and in the fixing on the upper left hand corner,
I show a section of the pin on which the link works, and have
shown a stud of about 1/4" diameter, tapped into the hollow pin
and a recessed washer which receives the greater part of the
nut; the corners only being left outside for screwing up.
This portion being castellated on the flats.

I think this is the better scheme unless you can suggest
an improvement. I have spent considerable time on this, and
am inclined to think that we shall not find a better solution.

I return Blue Prints F 4118 & 9 with remarks on as follows:-

F.4119 Reduce these slightly if possible.
This base is very similar to the front cross member base.

This is a drop forged plate about .15 thick having a
3/8 tapped boss in the centre say .4 to .5 thick.
It is rivetted to the side member before the cross tub es
are fitted.
A stud with a [] part is screwed into as the base has
a square recess amply large enough drop forged with the
back which fits loosely over the square preventing
the stud coming out.
