SECRET. HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} X4027. To R.{Sir Henry Royce} from W. re Peregrine. Sg{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}5/E12.7.32 Copy to Mr. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} You will have received one or two memoranda in regard to the above and the information so far seems to be very encouraging. You will recollect that it is just over a year since the Board agreed to "Peregrine" being put in hand and it is very urgently needed. There is no doubt that, if it had not been for our aero engine business, the Company would have been in a very difficult position. After a littleover a year we have managed to get one "Peregrine" experimental car through and it is disturbing now to hear that it is proposed to make even a small alteration to the size of the engine. I was surprised to note from one of Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}'s memos. that there was no carburetter for "Peregrine", unless it is that it was your intention that the S.U. should be used, but I was not previously aware of this. I am going up to Derby on Thursday in order to try see and try "Peregrine" and I gather that Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} is proposing to bring it down to you next week. In view of the great urgency of getting "Peregrine" into production as soon as possible one wonders whether it would not in the long run be best to adhere to the present size of engine and use the present type gearbox instead of waiting for the Bensport one. In any case I am afraid it is some time before we can hope to be in production as obviously we shall have to make three or four more experimental cars before we dare commit ourselves to production, but I am anxious to reach the production date as quickly as possible.
