6. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/IMR.3/R.R.10.9.37. Loc.5258, 5598, 5603. High Front Engine Mounting. The F.W.1175 support arch fractured and the F.W.1176 nose bearing broke off inside the rubbers. The method of taking the torque reactions was unsatisfactory. The whole mounting is being completely re-designed. Loc.5478 Mod. to Body Brackets. The wheelarch support brackets F.W.376/7/8/9 were collapsing at the end of the mileage. The F.W.376/7 brackets and the corresponding body brackets fouled the tyres on corners, the noise being audible in the car. This will require design modification. Ex.2607) 25/30.H.P. Rear Engine Suspension on Wraith. This has not sufficient restraint over fore and aft or lateral movements of the rear end of the unit. Either other means of controlling both these movements, or a mounting which will by itself serve that function is required. Experiments at Derby show that the attachment of this mounting to the cruciform is responsible for thumps on pick up and the transmission of engine periods. A re-design is in progress. Loc.5150 Rear Axle Buffers. The buffers received heavy use with the failure of the damper link connecting arms, but showed no weakness. Front Apron LOP.F.W.731. The points at the outer ends of the front downward extension of the apron fouled the bumper bar brackets. These points do not show and should be deleted. Rear Road Springs LOP.F.W.764. Loc.5442 Revised rear dumb irons and Rear Shackles. The shackles were free from knocks and no excessive side play developed. | ||
