x1166 Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} C. Eytle. Dr. RMC. HWS/fm. E/HDY.{William Hardy}2/HP.28.2.36. Back Axle Centre Casing Strengthened to provide for the use of a garage jack. N.Sch.4767 herewith shows the above. The aluminium casing is strengthened with ribs one of which inside the casing is provided to avoid distortion when the whole weight of the back of the car is taken on or near the drain plug as seems to be quite possible. This central rib may not be necessary but we think it best to take no chances as we have no time in which to make experiments. Very little can be done to strengthen the open end of the casing itself, so we have done what we can to strengthen the steel end plate and spigot ring. We show a thickened end plate which can be machined out of existing forgings. We also show a thickened end plate which is solid with the spigot ring. This adds strength and should be cheaper to produce, but cannot be made from existing forgings. The crown wheel bearing housing requires slight modification to accommodate the thicker end plate but existing forgings can be used. We have taken the opportunity to stiffen the casing at the open end where the flange for the pinion bearing housing is formed on the casing, as this seems desirable in view of the heavy end thrust from the pinion. [Text is crossed out in the original document] It appears that the proposed deletion of the rear inspection cones will be disadvantageous from the assembling point of view (see RMC/RH.{R. Hollingworth}1/ETM.24.2.36) and our suggestion is that the existing aperture is provided but the cover is made a close fit in the bore of the aperture only, instead of as now on both inside and outside spigots. | ||
