[Typed Header] To: H.S. From: G.E.H. [Handwritten Annotations - Top] Please return Hotel de France, Chateauroux. Noted JH HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} 3840 17/3/30. [Handwritten Annotations - Left Margin] By DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} See Wall -> [Circled X] [Typed Body] We have to-day received the new exhaust manifold, brake lever, and servo damper. The exhaust manifold has gone on very nicely, leaving approx. the clearance you give in your memo. the snag we find with it is that no clearance was allowed between the end of the exhaust manifold and the induction pipe. There should be as much space left here for the expansion as is allowed in the elongated holes. The brake lever has been fitted for reducing the braking to the rear. We have not tried this as yet, so therefore cannot give any results. We are fitting the servo damper. Re the front wing stays, these have again broken at the bottom flanges, and the tie rod between the head lamps has broken, showing that there is a considerable distortion of the frame taking place at these points. Re the front brakes. Taking off the segments on the front brakes has brought on rather bad squeaks during the last 300 mile run. Therefore we are replacing the segments. We are carrying out various other experiments with the rear damper oiling, etc. By the time this letter is received we shall have completed the 5,000 miles. Do you intend that the car should return upon the completion of the 5,000 miles. In view of the results that should be obtained with the new exhaust manifold and the new rear axle, because we are not satisfied at all that the rear axle is going to last. There are definite signs that it is getting into the same state as the one taken off. Will you please wire us on Wednesday your instructions. [Handwritten Annotation - Bottom] [Circled X] We have specified on our drawing that we must have expansion allowance between pipes. The real factor eg contraction after heating is quite OK By [Signature: J.H.H.] | ||
