CARBURATION.

Our petrol consumption is increasing rather alarmingly.

We hope that this will not be worse with the fixed carburetter.

I suggest that during our bench tests we record the petrol consumption at various steady loads with the weakest maintained mixture, with both types of carburetter. We then find out how this compares with the road consumption on the same average conditions.

This should shew us whether there is much lost during idling, and also whether there is much lost during opening due to power, both of which we anticipate would increase the consumption.

It will be remembered that Mr. de Salamanca stated that he got increased acceleration and better cobsumption on P.2. by drilling the air valve to allow of quicker action. We always imagined that our air valve worked rather more quickly than we desired, and that the want of vigour was mostly due to weak mixture, rather than due to throttling of the engine or richness, because the air valve has not opened quickly enough. This might be specially tested for confirmation.
