x3720. 8 ROLLS-ROYCE OF AMERICA, INC. SPRINGFIELD, MASS. Oy-1 Sept. 6, 1930. [STAMP: RECEIVED 18 SEP 1930] Rolls Royce, Ltd., Derby, England. Attention of: Mr. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} W. Hives Dear Mr. Hives: INTERNAL-GEARED TRANSMISSIONS Have spent the day with Neracher and J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} W. Pearson (Automotive Research Corp., Warren, Ohio) on the internal geared box. Am satisfied that this is what you ought to consider (as you had already decided before I left), on the score of - (1) Actual achieved silence. Two high gears indistinguishable in silence. (2) Ease of shift. (3) Cost of production. With increased volume and experience, this is now down (on Chrysler) to about £6 per complete gearbox (4 speed). Neracher, or rather the Automotive Research Corp. (which is he and Pearson) are going to do as follows:- (1) Send you a 4 speed box complete which you may or may not want to actually try in a 25. Anyway, you will want to pull it apart and examine it thoroughly. You will find I imagine, that considering the not very fussy workmanship, the silence achieved is phenomenal. (2) Send you drawings of the internals used in this box with full details as to materials, etc. (Continued) | ||
