An examination and test of this machine resulted as follows:-

1. Insulation of whole machine. This was OK at first but broke down after a few seconds. It was subsequently found that the breakdown had occurred at the field winding terminal on the carcase, due to carbon dust.

2. All brushes were found to be free in their holders.

3. The surfaces of the positive brushes were blackened and slightly pitted. The negative and the control brushes were only slightly blackened.

4. The commutator was badly blackened.

5. The control brush was found to [inserted: have the] early setting of 120°, therefore the output was probably high.
