6 Solder appeared to have only just run from the commutator connections.
7 When tapped, the field coils gave the cracking sound which indicates that the insulation inside is charred. Tested in the same manner the armature seemed to be quite solid.

It is difficult to say whether the fault was due to the machine having a high output, or, running on open circuit. The fact that the field coils appear to have been overheated, while the armature has only been overheated locally, at the commutator, suggests that the machine has been running on open circuit.
