2006 427 Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Les8/R.{Sir Henry Royce} 17th Sept. 1937. Messrs. Briggs Motor Bodies Ltd., Dagenham, ESSEX. (For the attention of Mr. Manning). Dear Sirs, We have received your sample steel and are proceeding with the parts. The thickness appears to be .095" to .100" instead of .080" (12 gauge American) as we had expected. Actually we are pleased to have the increased thickness, and have ordered side members of similar thickness. We are very anxious to have your prices for the various items mentioned in our Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Les7/R of the 7th instant. I am enclosing a sketch Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}449 showing the proposed alteration to the front of frame and would like to know the saving in cost (tool and part). The left hand side is the top of the frame, and the right hand side shows the attachment of the lower flanges. It is intended that both frame and gussets should be arc welded to the front cross member. It will be seen that the top flange of the side members are very wide at the front, but we estimate that the side members will be pressed from the same width of material. The lower flange of the side member is not increased. I have pencilled with dotted lines the top flange with a still greater increase in width, and would like to know if this is possible to produce, as it appears to make the neatest assembly. For the purpose of costing with a construction to Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}449 the brackets FB.2981/2 would be deleted. We have been doing some stiffness tests, and can find no advantage in the centre gussets FB.2950, so these will be deleted. We should like to know the | ||
