EFC. FROM E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} C. to - BJ. BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} ORIGINAL SEQUENCE STARTER MAIN SWITCH. X76353 E3/M25.7.28. In reply to your memo. EFC4/T20728., R.{Sir Henry Royce} agrees that some protection should be provided for the contacts on the starter motor, either: (1) A non-inductive resistance. (2) A condenser, or (3) A carbon break. He would like you to say which of these 3 proposals you think best. In the meantime however we have modified the design of the main switch to make room for the non-inductive resistance or the condenser, actually shewing the former in the design. Room has been made by moving back the vertical leg of the minor switch magnet frame, leaving space between the leg and the magnet winding for a flat bobbin made up of bakelite washers and ferrules on a brass centre. The non-inductive resistance should be 5 to 10 times that of the coil it bridges. If we use the condenser form of protection then it should be of the highest capacity possible in the space available. We attach LeC. 2581. shewing these modifications to BY's copy of this note. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} | ||
