Exhaust manifold, pipe & fittings.

The exhaust manifold has remained in good condition. We have had no further trouble with joints since last reporting. The flange of exhaust pipe making joint to manifold has again broken off during the continuation of the run. We were of the opinion that this was caused by the nut becoming loose. We have during the continuation of the run, observed that the cause of this fracture may be due to the expansion and contraction of the silencer and exhaust pipe. When these are cold there is a clearance of 5/16" between engine guard and pipe where same passes through at front end, and when these are hot there is no clearance whatsoever and the pipe has actually chattered and buldged the side of the guard up at the front end. This continually taking effect, there is a great strain placed upon the flange which eventually brakes off. This expansion is also the cause of the small bracket holding the exhaust pipe to frame breaking. To overcome the breaking of the flange, we have fitted a stiffer flange, turned up with a corresponding collar to fit the existing pipe, this was welded and rivetted on ;and up to the present has withstood the strain. We should recommend a similar feature as movement would THEN be taken by the spherical washers instead of the flange.

Engine suspension.

The front H.S. suspension worked loose. The rear bracket holding tube we were able to tighten up, the front bracket holding same had become worn and could not be tightened up due to the hole being slightly larger in diameter than the tube, with the bracket cap check-a-bloc..It was necessary to take off a slight amount off the cap FACE to allow same to grip the tube. The other suspensions have remained O.K.

Carburettor & fittings.

We had on one occasion a weakening of the carburation. We have upon examination of the carburettor found that this was due to water getting through the filters. There was also a considerable quantity of sand on the filter and plug from bottom of filter was full of very fine sand. We have however not been held up by this. The car has run 5000 Miles since the last examination. There is a considerable flooding of the carburettor after the car has come to rest. We have taken off carburettor complete and examined same. We cannot make it flood when off the car, also after refitting; it does not flood. We are still of opinion that it is the petrol in the induction pipe that runs back after the engine has stopped. There is no wear noticeable in the carburettor parts.

Fan bracket & fan belt.

It has been necessary at this mileage to take out one link from fan belt as the full ajustament had been taken up. The fan and bracket are in good condition and have given no trouble.

Magneto & drive.

XJ551
Magneto and drive are in good condition.
