X.1402 - RE VIBRATOR REGULATOR CONTROL OF OUTPUT. x294

Mr. Hives tells me that you have under consideration the final limiting of the charging current from an inherently controlled dynamo to a fully charged battery by the application of vibrator regulator voltage control to the field current.

The combination of the inherent regulation of the vibrator control in the later stages of the charge is used by Bleriot and Scintilla.

I had with me some matter relating to the Bleriot system during one of my visits, but at that time you did not wish to consider this owing to the additional complication.
At the moment it appears the simplest to send you the attached pages from the "Electrician" in which the whole system is described quite tersely, with the necessary illustrations. For convenience, however, in understanding the operation, I think you will find my own diagram of this simpler to follow as I have arranged it with no crossings. I therefore attach a copy.

With regard to the Scintilla, there is a relay which, operating by the voltage, changes the connections from inherent regulation to vibrator regulation at a suitable point in the completion of the charge. Other (U.S.A.) systems adopting this idea were mentioned by Mr. Gardner and Mr. Olley in some of their notes from U.S.A. in the early days with regard to the electrical equipment for U.S.A. chassis.
