Steel Brake Shoes.

Replying to your Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}4/MA.25.8.33, we have been inclined to favour forged steel shoes as being the simplest form, but it appears that there is considerable doubt whether the welded sheet metal type are not to be preferred.

We understand the Works do not favour the return to steel shoes of the forged type recalling their experience with those on the Silver Ghost.

We have also consulted the Tool Department who seem to be definitely of the opinion that welded sheet metal would be an easier manufacturing job and cheaper, and would remain of more constant weight.

R.{Sir Henry Royce} instructed us in December 1932 to substitute a welded sheet design for the forged one we had prepared for Phantom, and this is shewn on N. Sch. 3618.

We suggest that we should lay out an equivalent design for Bensport, simplifying and lightening as far as possible.
