K8417. (Conversion from VI to XXX).

This Engine was returned from the Works with suspected idler gear for oil pump drive missing.

On examination it was found that "an Idler Gear" was fitted, but was not the right type. The piece numbers were E.40215, Gear, and E.40212, Bracket, whereas the correct parts should have been E.40143 Gear, and E.40142 Bracket.

After exhaustive enquiries it was found that alternative gears were provided as a S pecial Ratio for the under-carriage drive, and we cannot account for these gears having been sent to Belper for assembly.

Unless the two Gears and Brackets assembled were placed alongside each other and the difference looked for, it would not be noticed on the assembly line.

There is a difference of .325 dia: on the gear and the bearing is offset in the bracket.

Herewith Photograph showing similarity of assembled parts.
