Dear Mr.Leslie, Thank you for your letter of the 21st instant. We are going into the shaft diameter question again with a view to seeing if we can use a separate spindle with offset connecting rods, as you suggest. I know we can increase the size of the spindle somewhat, but I doubt whether we can get to 1¼"; however, when we get this out on the drawing-board we will be able to say more about it. There should be an increased load at the end of the stroke of the lever, as these spring-loaded valves work on a cam the same as the other ones. It may be that the valves are set so tight that this difference is not noticeable. It should become pronounced where short, heavy springs are used. The thing that is troubling me at the moment is whether we can get a dash control on the spring-loaded valves. We have one or two schemes for doing this but they have not actually had a fair test. I would be glad to see you when you come over so that we might go into some of these points. I regret that the spring-loaded valves squeak.
