13908 H1/EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}/25.6.24. S/W. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} from H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} Re:- SMELL - 40/50 h.p. With regard to recent experiments carried out by W. to eliminate fumes and smell reaching front or rear seat passengers. The Sales Conference has asked me to enquire whether you think anything can be devised to get rid of the fumes arising from oil dripping on to the front silencer. This prevalent source of smell has the disadvantage of penalizing the very clean and attentive driver as well as the neglectful one. The former washes down his crankcase and the oil from tappets with petroleum and a brush through the louvred shield on to the silencer, and the latter allows the accumulated oil to overflow there by itself. It is thought you might scheme out some-thing which would allow such drippings to fall clear between the "bottom half" and the silencer. Would a series of holes in the top-half flange be possible. It is not thought that oil drippings are bad enough to be noticeable on the ground from the neglectful driver's car, while the careful driver would do his washing down in his garage. H.{Arthur M.
