West, Esq., Rolls Royce Limited, D E R B Y. CAP JJ. Dear Mr. West, I must apologise for not writing to you before, as requested by Mr. Minchin, in connection with glass wool separation. When used with the proper design of cell glass wool separation is very good from the point of view of retaining the active material in the positive plate, and thereby making a longer life cell. However, in order to get any real advantage from the paste retaining qualities of this type of separation it is necessary to have a heavy design of grid which will stand up to peroxidation for a long time. Also it is very desirable to use a thin wood separator as well to prevent shorts due to active material gradually creeping through the glass wool. When glass wool is used with the standard type of motor car battery the amount of space available is so small that it is not possible to get in any wood separator without reducing the thickness of the glass wool to such a point that it is of no use. We believe the Americans are using a glass wool separator without any wood separator at all, and we consider that it would be dangerous to do without the wood due to paste gradually working through, and that in all probability | ||
