C. to --. HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} EAC. 7. - IMPROVED SILENT DIRECT DRIVE ENGAGEMENT & ROLLER SPIGOT BEARING.

We send herewith LeC. 2111. shewing the above, to be incorporated in EAC.7. gearbox. We think this form of direct drive in place of the dogs will make for silent engagement.

With this scheme it is almost impossible to lubricate the plain bearing so that we have adopted a Hyatt roller type similar to Goshawk, with which scheme 2 means of lubrication are shewn on the drawing. One is the undercut in 1st. motion shaft at rear end of roller bearing, into which it is expected oil may be flung from the ends of the 3rd. motion shaft driving keys, and with a capillary action it may touch the ends of intermediate rollers and be drawn along by them into the bearing. The other scheme we have provided is what is usually done in similar cases by other manufacturers, and consists in drilling radial holes in the constant mesh pinion, in which it is expected oil will be squeezed down on the gears coming into mesh. This latter scheme if it is proved unnecessary in experimenting, we think should be discarded, as it entails certain undesirable machining operations.

With regard to the roller bearing this is not a standard one, but we think that it might be advisable to get the Hyatt people to make us a few of these for test purposes, as when we come to the new design of gearbox for the large car, the size of bearing shewn on this drawing will no doubt be what we shall require for the new box.

As we consider the above improvements would be highly desirable on the present large chassis, we think they should be tested on a standard gearbox as soon as possible, with a view to incorporation at a later date if found satisfactory.
