re. AMERICAN ALTERATIONS.

We have now received Standardisation Sheet from America No. 17, which appears to have been lost in the post.

The description of alteration from Springfield is as follows:-

"To taper the valve stem from a diameter of .428-1 just below head to full diameter of .433-1 at a line 2 1/2" below seating."

The Piece No. effected is E.13584.

The purpose of the alteration is " to prevent hard bearing between guide and upper part of valve stem where it is heated by gases".

This has been tested on 6 cars on test through dynamometer tests and road test.

No definite date is given for putting this alteration into manufacture, but it would appear from the chassis number when this alteration is to commence, that it has already been put into production.

This alteration is a general policy as dealt with by R.{Sir Henry Royce} in his memo R1/M24.8/23, Sheet 8, under Alteration No. 2520. The dimensions are now given, however, as stated above.

If you have any adverse criticisms on this point, will you please inform E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer}
