Dear Sirs,

We thank you for your letter of the 3rd. inst., and the various points raised therein have been duly noted.

In connection with the 11" clutch which you are returning due to the outside diameter of the cover being .030" out of round, this is not yet to hand, but we will let you have our comments after we have had an opportunity of examining same.

We cannot at the moment understand why this excessive out of round is brought about, unless the covers are gradually distorting on the flange after same have been despatched from our Works. You will recall that we have .002" tolerance on the flange diameter, but in actual practice we are holding this diameter to .001". After machining operation, which incidentally is the final one, the cover assemblies are assembled and are actually located for balance from the outside diameter of the flange, such as you requested.

From this you will appreciate that our balancing fixture must be more or less a replica of yours, in so far as the register for the outside diameter is concerned. Consequently, it would not be possible for the balancing fixture to take clutches anything approaching .030" out of round. Apparently some distortion of the cover must take place after the clutches have been despatched, as previously mentioned, and we are at a loss at the moment to see how it would be possible to avoid this.

Con't........
