DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}/EV.{Ivan Evernden - coachwork} c. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} X8600 BY3/G.19.6.28. RE REAR WHEEL & LUGGAGE CARRIER - PHANTOM. ------------------------------------------- Referring to EV{Ivan Evernden - coachwork}3/13.6.28. there is only one way to enable me to keep matters straight and that is to put on record in writing precisely what is required. This question of the rattling of the rear spare wheel carrier has been the subject of more than one of my memos to WW., but so far as I am aware we have had no positive information as to how it is to be avoided. My last effort in this direction was to suggest some form of clip, which would maintain the two tubes at a correct distance, the clips being spring operated. Such a proposal is a rational and reasonable one, although possibly a little difficult from the design point of view, and more expensive, but here again we have not had a reply. The allowance of space was arranged for by myself in the absence of any other method of dealing with it. Personally I think that Mr. Royce would take definite exception to rubber rings being put in at this position. If, however, the matter is raised by DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} with R.{Sir Henry Royce} and his views obtained I am quite prepared to do whatever R.{Sir Henry Royce} requires, but in regard to the question of fitting rubber rings I would certainly want his consent definitely before I could agree to such a poor compromise being adopted. /not With regard to your third paragraph, we have definitely demonstrated that anything short of the amount we have actually provided will/prevent rattling, the proposal of .187" is utterly inadequate for the purpose. With reference to the proposal in EV{Ivan Evernden - coachwork}3/13.6.28. that we should go to the scheme adopted on EAC.10, this of course is too belated for us. The Works are producing at the moment a series of luggage grids, and obviously we cannot suddenly stop one thing and start another, we are not magicians. BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} | ||
