X-8240. Hotel de France. Chateauroux. Indre. To Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} From G.W.H. 26.5.33 18. G.{Mr Griffiths - Chief Accountant / Mr Gnapp} IV. We are not reporting the temperature rise of the water when the engine is idling, but this trouble still exists especially with the hot weather we are experiencing ie. 25°C in the shade. The fan is too low down for its effectiveness at this speed. We have not gained any beneficial results as reported by putting up the speed, neither have we run into any trouble. HYDRAULIC DAMPERS We have made an improvement with our scheme, but it is too early to say that it is perfect, and we may be able to further improve it. The enclosed sketch shows what we have done. Your opinion will be appreciated. CRANKCASE BREATHER We have not as yet devised a scheme for this. The position of the breather hole in the crankcase makes it rather difficult. We have not however given it up as we are sure of an improvement. SERVO We cut off all the oil supply to the servo at the start of the test, yet we still find that a lot of oil is floating about the servo and mechanism. We have traced this to two sources. First the oil comes through the bearing in the gear box for the brake shaft, some gets on to the swinging arm, the rest is blown on to the servo. Secondly a quantity of oil leaks out of the equalizing shaft, gear case (frontbrakes) and is blown on to the servo. The latter can be reduced by cutting down the bijur supply. EXHAUST The exhaust system is working very well. The exhaust heat under the scuttle is excessive, by this I do not mean it is any worse than previous, but where as on the peregrine we were starved this is the opposite. The difference is in the manifold. Is it possible to have a similar manifold on the 2B as on the peregrine to overcome the heat question. G.W.H. | ||
