RE TAPPETS (NEW PHANTOMCodename for PHANTOM I)

With reference to the Production Chassis which was sent to us with noisy tappet trouble. This has been held up awaiting a good set of Tappets (which are in accordance with drawing) from Works. Complete Tappets are now to hand but are not a satisfactory job, therefore we do not feel justified in fitting them.

Tappets are quite a reasonable job, the chief trouble is with the guides which, without exception, are wide at mouth of the slot to the extent of .005 above drg. limits. It would appear as though this is caused by the spring of tool during slotting operation. We would suggest that .250 to .375 extra material is left on the body of Tappet to overcome the trouble of tool springing during slotting operation which causes wide slots. This extra material can be removed when slotting and broaching is completed.

The next fault is with Tappet Springs. More care should be taken when face grinding Springs to ensure that ends are perfectly square with body of Spring.
