Any existing engine will have to be mocked up by cutting and welding, in particular the one allocated for 31.G.7.

On PL.79 is shown the vacuum cylinder and valve linkage with the bosses necessary for the attachment of the same to the gearbox. It is essential that there should be one gearbox casting for all the gear boxes. Any bosses not required in a particular instance being left unmachined.

To cover this we suggest that we should adopt the policy adopted by Messrs. Hillman Ltd. of having the master detail for the right hand side lever gear and subsidiary details showing the special drilling required for other types of gearbox. The L.O.P. should be treated in the same way.

We suggest we should not leave this job until we have completed all 4 gearboxes with corresponding controls both right and left hand for side levers and column gear change.

On L.73 we show the actuation mechanism in the gearbox.

We have to set out the control mechanism for the column gear shift on R.H. cars.

The parts on the gearbox will remain unchanged whilst the counter shaft across the bell housing will become idler levers.

The control tower and tubes on the column move across and we are left with the problem of getting a connection between the steering column and the idler levers on the bell housing.

Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/HH. has done a lot of details on the schemes that have been available and we now proceed to round the job up, in particular for the left hand Silver Phantom 31.G.VII.
