For the attention of Mr.R.W.Harvey Bailey.

Dear Sirs,

We thank you for your letter of the 27th inst. together with copy of letter you have received from Mr.G.Hancock, and note that a number of cases have been located where our jack rams are returning very slowly. We are, therefore, making a full investigation of the matter.

We propose getting in touch with Mr. Hancock and if possible, procuring a sample of the fluid found in one of the systems where a slow retraction is reported. We will then have the fluid analyzed to ascertain if the components of this are disintegrating in any way after prolonged use.

When the question of fluid was discussed in the early stages at your works, we suggested that you should utilise our own special fluid in the jacks, with which we have had long experience, but up to this time as far as the jacks for Rolls-Royce cars are concerned, you have been purchasing supplies of a proprietary fluid known as "Castrolic" made by Wakefields and it may be possible that this fluid is actually unsuitable under certain conditions.

However, we will go into the matter very carefully and send you a full report on the whole subject.

Yours faithfully,
For SMITH'S JACKING SYSTEMS LTD.

Director & General Manager.
