re Peregrine.

I understandthat one of the troubles on test in France was that the engine lubricating oil gets too hot.

I also understand that the car which we tried on Friday and which is now in France has the latest modifications with ribbed crankchamber.

On the run which we gave it from Grantham to Biggleswade (where we got off) the oil temperature went up as high as 100°, and this with an outside temperature which was very cold, i.e. freezing.

This obviously is too hot and it makes me wonder [strikethrough] whether it was really worth this car proceed-ing with its test in France because it seems to me, if anything goes wrong with the engine, we shall blame the oil.

I will raise this point when at Derby to-morrow.

R.{Sir Henry Royce} in the course of conversation is worrying about the tail end shaft. I do not know quite what the point is but perhaps we can discuss this at the same time.
